Spot the signs of a scam

Written guide · 1 minute read · Updated

Pause, check independently and get support when an unexpected message asks you to act.

Stop before you act

A message that pressures you to send money, share a password or reveal a one-time code is a reason to pause. Do not use contact details supplied in that message to verify it.

Check independently

Use an organisation’s official website or contact details you already trust. Ask someone you trust to help you check if you feel unsure.

If you have responded

If money or account details may be at risk, contact your bank using a trusted contact route. Explain what happened and ask what to do next.

Would a little support help?

If you are unsure about the next step, tell us what you need help with. You do not need to know the technical terms.
